CareerSafe® LLC, the leading provider of online OSHA 10-hour General Industry and Construction Industry youth-focused training, was selected by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as one of 10 authorized training providers to continue delivery of online courses as part of its Outreach Training Program. The OSHA Outreach Training Program teaches workers how to identify, prevent and eliminate workplace hazards. The program also informs workers of their rights, employer responsibilities and how to file a complaint with OSHA.

College Station, Texas, May 24, 2011—CareerSafe Online Program Manager Andrea Foster Mack announced today the development of the National Young Worker Safety Day Campaign. The campaign is targeted at making a significant and critical impact on decreasing the number of young worker injuries and fatalities in the United States. Every two (2) minutes one young worker is injured in the workplace. Every seven (7) minutes one young worker is hospitalized because of a workplace injury. Every five (5) days one young worker is killed in the workplace. These staggering statics apply to 80% of all students before they graduate from high school.

The National Young Worker Safety Day Campaign kicks off Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the SkillsUSA® National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Mo (http://www.skillsusa.org/events/nlsc.shtml). The SkillsUSA conference will host over 5,600 high school and college students from across the country who will have the opportunity to join the campaign, sign safety awareness pledges, participate in safety awareness activities, and receive awareness materials to help keep safety at the forefront of their minds both in and outside of their work environment.

CareerSafe Youth Workplace Safety Video Contest

CareerSafe, The National Youth Safety Initiative, is proud to have sponsored the 2010-2011 National Youth Safety Video Contest. This contest is aimed at helping to create awareness for young worker safety and health. We are excited that we received over 20 entries from across the country depicting the importance of youth safety in the workplace. With the assistance from our judges at CareerSafe, National SkillsUSA, and Federal OSHA, we are proud to announce we have selected the three winning entries for the National Youth Safety Video Contest. We have notified these participants that they are contest finalists. We will be announcing the scholarship winners on June 22, 2011, at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. We will also post the winners and their videos on our website shortly after the conference.

We would like to extend a thank you to all who submitted a video, and helped educate your classmates, schools, and your community on how youth can StartSafe and StaySafe in the workplace. We feel that our national campaign for young worker safety is off to an amazing start.

CTC students prepare for a safer future

Thanks to Lowe's and the SkillsUSA organization, local construction students should have a safer career.

Fifty students in construction at the Frederick County Career and Technology Center are taking a 10-hour CareerSafe course through SkillsUSA, a national organization for career and technology students.

The first of its kind for students, CareerSafe was funded through a grant from home improvement store Lowe's, which contributed $1.5 million nationally to provide the Youth-to-Youth online program. CareerSafe addresses the high priority safety training needs of young workers, according to a statement from the CTC.

"Receiving this grant is a win-win for our students," Frank Taylor, an instructor and manager of the project for the students where they build an entire house, wrote by e-mail. "They receive safety training, and have a certification to show (prospective) employers. This is a wonderful partnership between industry and education.

Locally, Rhonda L. Poffenberger, Lowe's store manager, and Cindy Wilcox, commercial sales specialist, accepted a certificate of appreciation from CTC Principal Greg Solberg for the company's grant and support of student construction programs.

SkillsUSA has 15,000 chapters in the nation, representing 300,000 students and professional members in 130 occupational areas, according to a company statement.

On completing the course, students receives wallet cards from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The card shows the student has the fundamental safety knowledge needed in the workplace, according to a statement from the Career and Technical Center.

Lowe's Charitable & Educational Foundation also provides up to $10,000 for projects that provide life-changing experiences for students.

Harvard Graduate School of Education: Pathways to Prosperity Project

In the past, our country has focused its efforts on education reform using a one-size-fits-all approach, when what we really need is a greater emphasis on occupational instruction. Students today are not being prepared to lead successful prosperous lives in adulthood, and the scary fact is the unemployment rates of these youth have grown significantly. Youth unemployment hasn’t been this low since we began keeping the records in 1948. Even for college graduates, wages and employment opportunities are drying up.

Harvard Graduate School of Education focused their efforts on the Pathways to Prosperity Project. This report examines why and how youth are failing to be prepared. Currently, our country places an emphasis on an academic approach. In this study, however, it becomes clear that a better “pathways” approach should be adopted to help these youth succeed.

The pathways system is based on three elements. The first is the development of a broader vision of school reform that embraces multiple pathways to help young people navigate from adolescence to adulthood. In order for this step to be successful, we would need to broaden the importance of school counselors, as well as apprenticeship programs. Not all careers require a bachelors degree, yet these positions are not being trained for in schools.

The second goal is to create more work-based learning programs. When hiring, many employers look for experienced workers. In order for students to successfully obtain this experience, we need employers to create and support work-based learning programs of study.

The third and last step would be to have greater involvement of the community, employers, and the government in preparing youth for the workplace. We must remember these youth will be our future leaders. The overall goal would be by the time these youth reach their mid-twenties they will be well prepared to lead successful lives in society.

The study suggests that all major occupations be clearly outlined at the start of high school. Students would be able to directly correlate how their chosen courses would prepare them for the careers in which they show interest. Yet, student would be able to change courses if their original pathway is no longer a fit to their goals.

The Pathways to Prosperity report has received a reaction from many, including U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. Secretary Duncan says, “CTE has been the neglected stepchild of education reform. That neglect has to stop. The need to re-imagine and remake career and technical education is important…” The Secretary went on to discuss the need to boost college and career-readiness, but admitted that most of the current debate is about college-readiness only. CareerSafe® provides industry recognized certifications through Kansas State Department of Education project

High school students to have access to assessments leading to industry-recognized certifications and credentials through Kansas Sate Department of Education project

Topeka--Assisting Kansas high school students to achieve industry-recognized certifications and credentials is among the goals of a new project from the Kansas State Department of Education. The project helps provide for the cost of a variety of assessments for Kansas students enrolled in approved Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs or those in a focused CTE pathway. Through the project, students will have access to industry-recognized certifications, credentials, and assessments, and information from the assessment results will assist Kansas teachers in enhancing instruction to ensure students have achieved the technical skills necessary to be successful after high school graduation.

The effort is part of a State Board of Education focus on ensuring all Kansas students achieve challenging academic and technical standards to be prepared for high-demand/high-wage or high-demand/high-skill occupations in current or emerging professions. It also helps to achieve one of the requirements of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006, which is to provide access to or opportunities for industry-recognized certification and credentials.

“A nationally recognized credential is proof to the student and employer that the student is learning the skills needed to be successful once they enter the job market,” said Corey Peterson, executive vice president of Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Kansas and past chair of the Kansas Advisory Committee of CTE. “The credentialing process creates opportunities for partnerships between industry and schools, which results in a win-win for employers, teachers, schools, and most importantly the students. Credentials are also often recognized by post-secondary schools, which benefits those students seeking a degree.”

This project is one of several being pursued to further a State Board of Education initiative to ensure every student is college and career ready. Funding for the projects comes from a blend of state and federal funds.

The assessments that will be available for students in the 2010-11 school year were chosen based on their ability to span multiple career fields, therefore affecting a greater number of students. Identified certifications, credentials, and assessments include: IC3, Microsoft Office Suite (MOS), Adobe, OSHA 10-hour general and construction safety certifications, health care assessments, automotive assessments, Pre-Professional Assessments and Certifications (Pre-PAC), and the Kansas WorkReady! Certificate. .

The State Department of Education will contact high schools with state-approved CTE career clusters/pathways or VE-2 (Vocational Education) programs regarding access to the project.
